And it doesn't matter how many people share the name, how many lives are taken and accredited to the title. There is only one Black Widow. I am the best at what I do, and I do whatever I must.

You can call me Natasha.

Relevant Historical Timeline:

  • 1928: A lone female child, approximately one year old or less, is tossed from a burning building set ablaze by Nazi infantry. The child is rescued by Soviet infantry soldier Ivan Petrovich and taken into his custody. He and the man of his unit look after the child for ten years. He calls her “Natalia”, because that is the name the woman screamed as she tossed the child from the window. The name “Natalia Alianova Romanova” comes later, by vote of the men in the unit. The men come to call her “War Child” in the future.
  • 1938: Suspicious and distrustful of a new wave of recruits to his unit, Ivan keeps the maturing, pretty girl close. Eventually, however, he fears for her safety and requests that she be placed somewhere safe, and not into a state orphanage. Stalin himself, having heard of the so-called War Child, places her in the custody of one Taras Romanoff and instucts the master spy to train the girl in his arts. She attends Taras’s school and is treated by him as some twisted version of a “daughter”. From him she learns a spymaster’s skills, subterfuge, liecrafting, blackmail, misdirection, various additional survival and combat skills - and most importantly of all, assassination. She is one of his most prized students. It is from him that she first gets the name “Natasha Romanov/Romanoff” - a more informal firstname, and the masculine-version of her given surname name.
  • 1941: Taras Romanoff is assassinate by Natalia’s “Little Uncle”, James “Logan” Howlett - another of Taras’s students. Following Taras’s death, Natasha - left alive, if a bit blood-spattered - wanders into the Siberian wilderness, where she once again encounters Ivan Petrovich and his unit. He escorted her back to the nearest Soviet base, wherein she encountered Lyumila Kudrin for the first time.
  • 1941/1942: Natasha is recruited into the Black Widow Program by Lyumila Kudrin, a subset of Department X’s Red Room. She is given extensive continued training and an intense regimen of biology-enhancing drugs, including psychoactive chemicals and biotechnologically advanced vitamins. She was also given several rounds of mental and physical reconditioning; false and implanted memories were also used. She was the Program’s most promising student and excelled far and beyond the expectations of her handlers and the capabilities of her other program mates.
  • 1942-1956: Working for Red Room, Natasha does several tours as an attachment to Soviet infantry teams, performing sensitive operations undercover and months-long search and destroy guerrilla-style warfare. With her often is Ivan Petrovich. At other intervals, she is a lone operative in undercover situations, sent deep behind enemy lines to gather intel or do away with a person of interest. Her chemical enhancement continues throughout this period, as does a series of mental conditioning and reconditioning incidents, particularly when she has done or received sensitive information which Red Room wants forgotten - especially by the operative who gathered it.
  • 1956: Natasha and Ivan Petrovich are seriously wounded in an incident in Berlin. Under orders, the Winter Soldier - another Soviet operative - gives them a life-prolonging agent and provides emergency back up before returning them to Russia and Natasha to Red Room’s base. Shortly thereafter, Natasha and the Winter Soldier (James/Bucky Barnes) begin training together and eventually entangle one another in a forbidden affair. It is during this time that Natasha is finally given her final round of chemical enhancements and - having judged that she has fully matured and is in peak condition - is given the Russia variation of the Super-Soldier serum. She is dubbed an official “graduate” of the program and given the title of “Black Widow”, with the submoniker #001.
  • 1958: By this time, the affair between Natasha and the Winter Soldier has been discovered and they are forced to end their relationship. Natasha is ordered into an arranged marriage, courtesy of the Kremlin, to experimental test pilot Alexei Shostakov. Despite the marriage’s purely utilitarian origins, Natasha’s fondness for Alexei was genuine. Later told he’d died in a rocket test, Natasha mourned his loss bitterly. Shortly thereafter, she is recruited by the KGB and throws herself headlong into her work as a spy and saboteur to ease her pain.
  • 1958/1959-1980: Natasha continues to work for the KGB (and for Red Room) for many, many years as their most prized stealth asset - but in later years she begins to have tremendous nightmares and excruciating headaches; moments of time begin to slip away on occasion and she begins to notice incongruities in her memory. She makes mention of the disorienting effects to several of Red Room’s scientist and physicians at various points in time - but eventually ceases to say anything of them at all when she begins to suspect that there is something suspicious about their prodding and questions. In time, she steals information from her own file and learns the full extent of what Red Room’s conditioning and programming has done to her and taken from her. Furious, disillusioned, betrayed - and at her core, scared - Natasha begins to lay plans for her escape, while Red Room’s higher up’s secretly eyeball promising new candidates to take her place.
  • 1980: Realizing that Red Room is entertaining candidates for her replacement, Natasha initially wants nothing to do with the highscoring, viciously idolizing Alia Prakenskii. The girl is assigned to partner with her and train under her for several months and despite knowing exactly the girl is meant to become, Natasha appreciates her excellence and her cool, caustic attitude. Alia grows on Natasha and despite the inevitably that the girl will probably be sent to kill her, the Black Widow even grows to like her. Meanwhile, while Alia is under her tutelage, Natasha continues to run missions, but has a very public falling out with her mentor and long time companion Ivan Petrovich, seemingly over his decision to leave the Soviet Army - and then later on, she expresses disgust of his apparent disloyal desertion of the USSR. In her room, during her free time, Natasha reads and often speaks to herself in Portuguese - a fact which Alia alone observes, or notes.
  • 1981: En route to a mission in Spain, on radio silence, Natasha Romanoff falls off Red Room’s radar. Her tracking beacon makes it to Spain, but when she never checks in, they send in back up to find her. They locate the beacon inside the hold of a cargo ship carrying Russian furs - but find no Black Widow. Natasha is declared AWOL and a furious hunt for her begins, secretly - and primarily focused on Portugal, on the information of one Alia Prakenskii, based on her observations of Natasha in recent months. Red Room’s operatives search Portugal for several months but turn up nothing.
  • 1982-1991: Having made her escape without incident, Natasha re-emerges in the US under the assumed alias of Alexandra Kelly. Laying low for that first year, Natasha - as Alexandra - eventually begins to do some work, mainly badger games for blackmail, sometimes assassination work. Low level, shadowy - but not nearly as challenging as she’s used to. She takes up some mundane work as well, for a cover; she finds a job in a library and masquerades as a mild-mannered librarian, while funding her new life in hiding with her illicit gains.
  • 1991-1992: When the USSR collapses in 1991, Natasha sheds the alias of Alexandra Kelly to go on the hunt, crossing oceans and the ravages of war-wrecked Europe to track down and dispose of all the faceless figures behind the Red Room, Department X and the creation of the Black Widows. She leaves a trail of bodies in her wake and racks up a kill count so high-profile that the newly empowered government body that is S.H.I.E.L.D. takes notice. It is at this point that S.H.I.E.L.D. first starts to keep tabs on Natasha Romanoff.
  • 1992-1999: After hunting down as many of the puppet masters and monster-makers as she could find - and leaving a lasting impression for any that might remain yet in the shadows - Natasha is finally an independent operator once more, free and clear. She makes associates and finds a myriad of job opportunities relatively quickly; despite her youthful appearance, she has the experience and the spine to take on and stand beside some of the roughest players in the game - and come out on top. Her intel is always good and where information is scarce, she always seems to find a special treasure chest full of it. She quickly becomes renowned not just for her information gathering, but for her undercover quality and flawless wetwork. She’s not afraid to throw down and she makes a name for herself in the criminal underworld’s global network - and finally attracts the firm attention of S.H.I.E.L.D. once and for all.
  • 2000: Clint Barton, sharpshooter and agent of S.H.I.E.L.D., is sent after Natasha Romanoff on a single-objective operation: to neutralize the agent known as Black Widow. And so begins a months-long game of cat and mouse, the predator and the knowing prey taking turns evading and pursuing one another. What happens between them isn’t a matter of record, but instead of eliminating the Black Widow, Barton brings her into the fold and Natasha Romanoff becomes S.H.I.E.L.D.’s newest agent and asset.
  • 2000-2008: As an agent of S.H.I.E.L.D., Natasha is assigned to a variety of missions and operations, only occasionally solo. Primarily, she works with a partner - Clint Barton, codename “Hawkeye”, and together they are the body of S.H.I.E.L.D. Strike Team Delta. They’re the ones that get sent in when the agency wants it done right. In the eight years they work together, Natasha and Clint become a cohesive, well-oiled team and understanding, fluid partners. They work exceptionally well together.
  • 2008-2012: Natasha is sent on assignment for a handful of highly-classified undercover assignments related to the still-benched Avengers Initiative. One of these assignments is as a graduate student and lab assistant to Betty Ross, in the absence after Bruce Banner’s initial transformation into the Hulk. A later assignment, toward the end of this period, involved her posing as a mid-level member of the Stark Industries legal department and eventual assistant to Pepper Potts in her capacity as CEO before Tony Stark’s return.
  • 2012-Present: After serving as a member of the S.H.I.E.L.D. organized response team codenamed “The Avengers”, Natasha Romanoff continues to serve in her capacity as an agent of the organization.
